November 2012 School Levy Results

It was a good night for a lot of school levies. Requests for new money were passed at rates 10% higher than last November's levies efforts, and renewals held steady at their normal 85% rate.

The biggest news, perhaps, was the passage of the Cleveland school levy 57-43. It's been a long time since Cleveland has produced such strong support for their schools, and that support now needs to be rewarded with a plan that delivers a quality education.

Here are the results of the August 7th 2012 school levy elections, currently reported.

The passage rate is very similar to those of the 2011 August attempts. August ballots are no place for school levies it seems, unless there's significant urgency.

Meanwhile, as school struggle with the ongoing state budget cuts, Ohio should finish fiscal year 2013 with a $408 million surplus.

Data proves voters increasingly supporting schools

Since we launched Join the Future almost one year ago, we have been tracking Ohio's school levy election results. Below we have plotted the passage rates for New and Renewal levies, and the combined results. As you can see, passage rates have been steadily increasing since the May 2011 primary. Let's hope that voters continue to support our public schools in ever greater numbers, despite the Governor's inexplicable call to vote against school funding.

As you can see it was another difficult night for school funding. with just 8 of 25 issues being approved by the voters. All renewal and replacement requests passed, along with just 4 of 21 new requests.
